Author Guidelines

Freedom.Science welcomes clear, rigorous and interdisciplinary contributions that advance the scientific study of sustainable, responsible and harmonious freedom.

The journal is especially interested in work that connects freedom with safety, responsibility, human dignity, institutional trust, technology, governance, resilience and ethical design.

Authors do not need to follow an overly rigid format for initial submission. Clarity, structure, originality and relevance are more important than unnecessary formalism.

Manuscript Structure

A typical manuscript includes:

  • Title
  • Author names and affiliations
  • ORCID identifiers, recommended
  • Abstract, normally 150–250 words
  • Keywords, normally 4–8
  • Main text divided into clear sections
  • Acknowledgements, optional
  • Funding statement
  • Conflict of interest statement
  • Ethics statement where relevant
  • Data availability statement where relevant
  • References
  • Appendices, optional

The exact structure may vary depending on the type of contribution.

Article Types and Indicative Length:

Indicative lengths:

  • Research Articles: 4,000–9,000 words
  • Conceptual Papers: 3,000–8,000 words
  • Perspective Papers: 2,000–6,000 words
  • Position Papers: 2,000–6,000 words
  • Methods Papers: 3,000–8,000 words
  • Review Papers: 5,000–10,000 words
  • Work-in-Progress Papers: 1,500–5,000 words
  • Editorials: 1,000–4,000 words
  • Invited Commentaries: 1,000–3,000 words
  • Book Reviews: 800–2,000 words
  • Letters and Discussion Pieces: 500–1,500 words

These lengths are indicative. Shorter or longer submissions may be considered where justified by the topic, method or contribution type.

Referencing Style

Freedom.Science uses the NEDION Numeric referencing style.

In-text citations should appear as:

[1], [2], [3–5]

References are listed in order of appearance.

Authors should ensure that all references are complete, accurate and retrievable.

Where available, DOI links should be included.

Language

Manuscripts should normally be submitted in English.

Dutch-language submissions may be considered during the founding phase if they include an English abstract.

For publication, indexing and international visibility, final accepted manuscripts should normally be available in English.

Ethical Requirements

Authors are responsible for ensuring that submissions:

  • are original;
  • properly reference sources;
  • respect confidentiality and third-party rights;
  • comply with applicable regulations;
  • disclose conflicts of interest;
  • include funding information where relevant;
  • address human-subjects, data or privacy issues where applicable;
  • use responsible language, especially in sensitive societal, legal, political or technological contexts.
