About Freedom.Science

Freedom.Science is an interdisciplinary open-access academic journal dedicated to the scientific study of sustainable, responsible and harmonious freedom.

The journal investigates the conditions under which freedom can emerge, be sustained and be protected in complex societies.

Rather than treating freedom only as a political, legal or philosophical concept, Freedom.Science studies freedom as an emergent property of safe, integrated, sustainable, responsible and trustworthy socio-technical systems.

The journal is founded on the proposition that safety is not the opposite of freedom. Safety is the condition that allows meaningful freedom to emerge.

Freedom.Science creates a scholarly space where engineering, safety science, governance, ethics, law, artificial intelligence, human dignity, democracy, institutional trust and societal resilience can be studied together.

Mission

The mission of Freedom.Science is to help establish freedom as a rigorous interdisciplinary field of scientific inquiry.

The journal aims to develop scientific foundations for understanding how freedom becomes possible, sustainable and responsible in real societies.

Freedom.Science does not aim to replace existing philosophical, legal or political traditions. Instead, it connects those traditions with systems thinking, safety science, engineering, governance, ethics, technology assessment, AI and societal resilience.

Position within the NEDION Ecosystem

Freedom.Science is part of the wider NEDION ecosystem.

Within this ecosystem, Freedom.Science follows the conceptual development from:

  • Safety
  • Integration
  • Sustainability
  • Responsibility
  • Harmony
  • Freedom

Safety.Science asks:

How can society become safer?

Freedom.Science asks:

Once safety becomes sufficiently reliable, what forms of freedom become possible?

Freedom.Science therefore studies freedom not as the absence of all limits, but as a condition that emerges through safety, responsibility, trust, dignity and harmony.
